About the Artist

Laura Cody

Laura was born and reared in New York City and has lived in a number of cities throughout the United States. After a successful 25 year career in the medical profession, she and her husband, Bill, retired to the Beaufort, South Carolina area. Throughout her life, Laura loved art. She managed to squeeze in art classes and workshops to further her artistic skills while juggling a career and raising three children. Upon moving to the beautiful low country of South Carolina, Laura said, "the artist in me exploded with a passion. Everywhere I looked I saw beauty and I was determined to capture that beauty on canvas." Primarily, Laura paints in oils but also enjoys working with pastels. "My vivid, colorful representations of landscapes, seascapes and still life have been labeled by many of my customers as 'Happy Art' and I find this very gratifying. I look for beauty in every subject and I try to portray that beauty so that others can experience joy through my art. If my paintings make people happy then I've reached that goal." Laura also finds painting portraits very rewarding. She paints beautiful, realistic portraits of children, adults and pets. Presently, the majority of Laura's art can be viewed in two market-places in the Beaufort area: the Fordham Market (where she is part owner of Island Artists) and the Spotted Dog Marketplace. Other locations to view her paintings are Hilton Head and Bluffton, South Carolina as well as various art galleries in the Beaufort area. Participating in art shows and festivals in the Southeastern States is also something Laura finds very enjoyable. "I love meeting and interacting with people and talking with them about art." A well known artist in the Low Country, Laura is achieving national prominence since her art work now hangs in private collections throughout the United States.

Commissioned

One of the best parts of my work is doing special orders for clients. Each of these commissioned orders usually comes with its own touching story and memory. There is such tremendous satisfaction and pride knowing you have created something that is complimented, praised and appreciated by your customer. So far all my experiences with commission work have been extremely positive and I have met some wonderful people along the way. It truly makes my business an enjoyable venture.
From the selection of work in this commissioned gallery it is obvious my subjects are varied. All I need is a good photo or 2 of the subject, some insight as to what a customer would like and what they feel is important to portray in the painting. I might add an artistic view point if necessary. I always try to keep the customer involved and I usually will show them or email them pictures as I progress with the painting, so that they may have some input during the process.
